"Being an experimental band isn’t tough, but being a good experimental band is. Indeed, there is distinction between producing sounds freely and bravely, and taking that way too far. How far is too far? Using a rooster as a background singer? Recording armpit-fart sounds? Fort Collins electronic-folk group Castles scratches our itch for local art-rock achievement. They have plenty of well-executed, out-of-the-way sounds and rarely descend into unnecessary sonic fuckabout. Castles is led by Matthew Sage, who builds tracks on his laptop, mixing natural rock phenomena (drums, guitar and vocals) with often-danceable beats and other tasty synthetic distortions. The result is successfully spacey, with Sage’s voice sounding like he’s either sleep-deprived or on some heavy downers, singing cryptic-yet-imagistic lyrics over robust percussion and shimmering-sunset atmospherics."

i feel polarized.
like good things have my wrists, and i have theirs (and though we dig our nails into eachothers wrist-meat, we grit and smile through the pain, because things will be good)
and bad things have my ankles, and i'm kicking away
and somehow--as i try to balance and escape and make sure my ribs aren't seperated
and my spine doesn't come apart
like a candynecklace with loose elastic--
i am desperate to reach some sort of middleground.

castles finally feels like a band to me now. Like it is cooperative and collaborative. For a long time, it has been me making songs about things that bother/trouble/confuse/beguile me...but now, it is me dealing with these same problems, but in a forum with two of my best friends who double as two of my favorite musicians (to play with AND listen to). They have my wrists. I have theirs.

what if i'm pulled up (or pull myself up)
what if i'm pulled down (or let go and let myself fall)

apathy or indifference?
confusion or self-contradiction.
confidence or over-compensation.

(p.s. read THE THINGS THEY CARRIED by Tim O'Brien if you like books about war. According to O'brien, war is about what you have in your pack and how it relates to what you have in your heart. if i were in his war, i would put my pack down and run into the jungle. i would sing while others marched, and i would tell war stories full of lies, just to make them sound "truer than the truth.")
